I finally did it! I finally convinced myself that running a 1/2 marathon was a "good" idea....For a year or so Lydia has been trying to "convince" me that it's the greatest thing to run 13.1 (or in her case 26.2 miles). I refused for a long time that it was a good idea until I finally broke down and signed up for the San Francisco half marathon on July 29th!
A few things that I used in my argument against running any further than 3 miles were the following:
1. Why in the world would I want to?
2. I get bored way too easily.
3. WHY in the world would I want to?
4. Is someone chasing me while running 13.1 miles?
5. My feet will literally fall off.
6. I'm not built to be a distance runner (I still stand my ground on this)...
7. WHY in the world would I want to?
8. What if I have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the race, I refuse to hold it and or go while running (GROSS THOUGHT).
9. Still NOT built to be a distance runner
10. WHY would I want to?
But then something changed, for one, Lydia is running the 1/2, and for another my oldest longest standing friend LaRoyshia is running as well. My thought, well shoot, if they are doing it, I should too. Not only that, but I really haven't tried to run that far so everything that I was saying to myself were unknown reasons. Which if I dig deep enough, it meant that I was scared. SCREW THAT! I'm not scared to run 13.1 miles, I would be scared if a Zombie were chasing me but not a run with a few friends in an awesome city. So why not?
Training has been interesting...I have stuck to the 12 week schedule about 95% of the time...I have been doing the long runs with LaRoyshia and that has really helped! She is very motivational and she sticks close to me (ahead) so it helps me to keep going. I have been running on an older pair of running shoes that was causing a lot of pain in my hips and knees but I finally went and got fitted for a pair and I LOVE them (Thanks Sammy!) Also, I have been tracking the majority of my runs on Nike GPS....its a cool tool and it helps me know where I'm at distance and time wise...I try not to share too much of my runs on facebook, but when I hit a milestone, I try and brag a little!
The last long run was 7 miles, and it was the furthest I have ever run. I can't explain to you the feeling I got when I was done...it was a feeling of excitement and pride. 7 miles! Not to mention I ran on a nasty HUGE blister that formed and then exploded while running. At the moment I'm babying the wound because its pretty gnarly and raw, but tonight I will run 4 miles, even if I have to crawl most of the way! It's also really funny how 7 miles didn't seem as bad and I thought it would be....I'm becoming a runner by thinking that way I think, and I don't mind it.
I'm excited for the race, I hope that all the training and pride carries on through so maybe, just maybe I'll run another one after my very first one!! We'll see! Wish me luck!
